ADULT TRENDS

New Orleans Growth Industries Also Leading Providers of Employee Training

Banking. Oil and Gas. Health Services. Hospitality. Retail. Shipbuilding. The Louisiana Department of Labor lists these as New Orleans' leading growth industries

Banking. Oil and Gas. Healthcare. Utilities. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports that these industries are the leading providers of employee assistance for education and training (1996 Employee Benefits Report).

See any similarities? Nationwide, better than 80% of hospitals, banks, oil and gas firms, utilities and insurance companies provide employee assistance for education and training. In New Orleans, banks, healthcare organizations, and oil and gas also are the largest investors in employee education and training.

Each year, U.S. employers spend more than $30 billion annually on education and training of their employees; this expenditure equals about 1% of payroll. In growth industries, this investment in employee training usually exceeds 2%; in many, 5 - 7% of payroll is not uncommon.

"Although more than 90% of all employers currently offer some level of support for the continuing education of employees (data from the International Foundation of Employee Benefits Plan survey projects 97% by the end of year 2000)," observes Mark Stahl, assistant dean for UNO Metro College, "it is the level of support that makes the difference." By the end of the current year, it is estimated that 75% of all adult business-related education and training will be paid by employers.

Continuing education is necessary just to keep up with the information and skills needed to perform a job. "Information is changing the workplace so rapidly that the half-life of the value of an undergraduate degree is less than seven years in some fields," cautions UNO alumnus George Mahl, president of Mahl and Associates, Inc., a local engineering firm, and a board member of UNO's Business/Higher Education Council. Lifelong learning is no longer a luxury -- it's a necessity.

Individuals in the workforce can really help themselves," adds Stahl, "by helping their New Orleans area employers to understand that training doesn't cost--it pays." Spread the word -- growth industries train their employees.

UNO Professional Development Partners With Labor Department to Deliver Incumbent Worker Training

Louisiana's Incumbent Worker Training is providing businesses the opportunity to work with government and local training providers to ensure a properly trained workforce and a consistent supply of employees with the skills necessary for company growth and employee advancement. Under this state-funded program, employers who have operated in Louisiana and contributed to the state's Unemployment Insurance System for at least three years may apply for Workforce Development Training funds.

Incumbent Worker Training is designed to benefit business and industry by assisting in the skill development of existing employees, increasing employee productivity and the growth of the company. Companies may apply for up to $270,000 in training funds for a two-year period.

Preferential consideration is given to those companies that select public training providers, donate equipment and supplies to the program, and that participate in the Welfare-to-Work initiative.

As a public training provider the University of New Orleans is an active participant in this program. We work with companies to customize training programs that serve their particular needs offering customized, client-proven workshops on more than 100 supervision, communications, computer applications, and technical training topics and issues that organizations face in today's competitive workplace.
